As part of the Year 6 Science Club , pupils carried out a ‘Fire Writing’ activity. This involved painting a solution of Sodium Nitrate on to an absorbent paper, drying it out then applying a glowing splint to it. The heat from the splint made the sodium nitrate smoulder through the paper, creating the letters that had been painted on it. Once alight, pupils took their paper outside the lab so as not to set off the smoke alarm with the copious amount of fumes being produced.
