History of the School

The Richard Pate School was founded in 1946 and forms part of the Pate’s Grammar School Foundation, a charity dating back to the 16th century. It is an independent co-educational day school for pupils from three to eleven years old. In 1987, the school was relocated from the centre of Cheltenham to an excellent eleven and a half acre site on the southern outskirts of the town. It now accommodates approximately 280 children, boys and girls in more or less equal numbers, with a favourable teacher – pupil ratio.

The Headmaster is a member of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS). The school successfully underwent a full ISI inspection in February 2005 and is fully accredited by the ISC (Independent Schools Council).
